In-store vertical farming

Berlin-based urban farming startup Infarm aims to expand globally with its in-store greenhouses. The startup grows crops in AI-controlled indoor environments and uses less water, land and pesticides than traditional farming methods. This approach could also aid food supply chain fragility, as shown by panic buying this year, as crops are grown close to the people eating them. The product is scalable as the individual farms are connected and remotely controlled from a central farming platform that gathers information about the individual crop's growth. In late 2020, Infarm secured a deal to expand to Japan. In late 2020, Infarm secured a deal to expand to Japan.

All of this points towards a growing wave of technological, logistical, and business model in vertical farming, and an influx of investment that will fuel a rapid market expansion.
