Smart Building Certification

Third-party certification for smart buildings

SPIRE claims to be "the industry’s first smart building program that holistically measures building technology and performance" across six areas: power and energy, health and wellbeing, life and property safety, connectivity, cybersecurity, and sustainability. Developed by the Telecommunications Industry Association and UL, a widely respected certification laboratory, the service provides a dashboard that can help identify areas for enhancements and investments to improve building performance and allows buildings to earn a "Smart Building Verified Mark".

This points towards a future where tenants, brokers, investors, regulators and other stakeholders in the built environment use third-party certifications as a proxy for assessing a complex set of characteristics and services that enhance value.
